The Cryogenic Frost Point Hygrometer (CFH) is a balloon-borne hygrometer developed by the University of Colorado. CFH uses the chilled-mirror principle to measure water vapor from the Earth's surface up to the mid-stratosphere. It is more sensitive to water vapor than standard radiosondes, enabling it to measure dew point temperatures with an accuracy of 0.2 K. During the balloon’s flight, CFH collects measurements approximately every 2 seconds and has a vertical resolution of about 50 meters in the troposphere and 100 meters in the stratosphere.

An ozonesonde consists of an electrochemical ozone sensor connected with a meteorological radiosonde to collect ozone, temperature, pressure, and humidity measurements as it ascends through the atmosphere. It provides ozone profile measurements at a resolution of 100 to 150 m. Ozonesondes have a typical measurement rate of 0.1 Hz and can collect profiles up to around 35 km.

The Compact Optical Backscatter Aerosol Detector (COBALD) is an in situ balloon-borne optical sensor developed at ETH Zürich. It detects aerosol backscatter at 455 nm and 940 nm using two light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources. COBALD can provide aerosol backscatter profiles up to about 30 km. It has a measurement frequency of 1 Hz and a vertical resolution of 5 m.

The Optical Particle Counter (OPC) is an optical device used to measure aerosol particle size and concentration. It determines particle size and concentration by detecting the intensity of scattered light. Most OPCs operate within the visible to near-infrared wavelengths (500-1100 nm) and have a time resolution of 1 second. They are typically used to measure particles larger than 0.5 μm in diameter. OPCs can be used for both airborne and ground-based applications.

The Balloon-borne Aerosol Impactor (BAI) is an aerosol collector designed for zero-pressure balloon flights. It includes a four-stage impactor, a vacuum pump, a volumetric flow controller, and a Raspberry Pi-based controller connected to a meteorological sonde. The impactor operates on the principle of inertia and determines the size cutoff at each stage based on flow and instrument dimensions. Aerosols are sampled at four stages according to their particle radius: 2, 0.5, 0.15, and 0.05 µm, with a flow rate of 7 liters per minute.

Condensation Particle Counters (CPCs) are in situ sensors that measure aerosol particle concentrations. CPCs determine aerosol levels by condensing fluid onto particles, causing them to grow to sizes detectable by optical scattering. Typically, CPCs can detect particles ranging from 7 nm to 3 μm, measure concentrations up to 100,000 particles per cubic centimeter, and provide readings every second. CPCs are manufactured by TSI Incorporated and can be used on airborne, shipborne, and ground-based platforms.

The Cryogenic Frost Point Hygrometer (CFH) is a balloon-borne hygrometer developed by the University of Colorado. CFH uses the chilled-mirror principle to measure water vapor from the Earth's surface up to the mid-stratosphere. It is more sensitive to water vapor than standard radiosondes, enabling it to measure dew point temperatures with an accuracy of 0.2 K. During the balloon’s flight, CFH collects measurements approximately every 2 seconds and has a vertical resolution of about 50 meters in the troposphere and 100 meters in the stratosphere.

The Submillimeter Limb Sounder (SLS) was a passive heterodyne radiometer designed for high-altitude balloons and aircraft. It measured thermal emission spectra around 640 GHz to detect chlorine monoxide (ClO), hydrogen chloride (HCl), and ozone (O3), and at 604 GHz for nitric acid (HNO3) and nitrous oxide (N2O). It had a field of view of 0.3 degrees, resulting in a vertical resolution of 1.5 km at an altitude of 25 km. SLS completed a full scan in approximately 300 seconds.

The Cold Atmospheric Emission Spectral Radiometer (CAESR) is a balloon-borne scanning passive radiometer developed at the University of Denver. It measures thermal emission in the 7.5-12.6 μm spectral range. These measurements are used to derive nitric acid profiles (HNO3) up to 30 km with an effective vertical resolution of 1.5 km. CAESR can complete a scan in less than 10 seconds and has a field of view of about 1.5 degrees.

The Cryogenic Frost Point Hygrometer (CFH) is a balloon-borne hygrometer developed by the University of Colorado. CFH uses the chilled-mirror principle to measure water vapor from the Earth's surface up to the mid-stratosphere. It is more sensitive to water vapor than standard radiosondes, enabling it to measure dew point temperatures with an accuracy of 0.2 K. During the balloon’s flight, CFH collects measurements approximately every 2 seconds and has a vertical resolution of about 50 meters in the troposphere and 100 meters in the stratosphere.

NOAA Water (NW) is an airborne, two-channel, closed-path tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer developed by NOAA. It measures water vapor and enhanced total water content in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Originally designed for installation on NASA’s Global Hawk Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS), it can also be deployed on other high-altitude aircraft. It uses second harmonic detection near the 2.7 μm wavelength to measure water vapor. Its typical sampling frequency is 1 Hz.

The Lightweight Airborne Chromatograph Experiment (LACE) is an in situ balloon-borne, three-channel gas chromatograph. It was designed to operate on the Observations of the Middle Stratosphere (OMS) balloon gondola. It provides profile measurements of various gas species up to 32 km with a vertical resolution of 300 m. LACE measures halon-1211, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and sulfur hexafluoride every 70 seconds. It measures methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide every 140 seconds.

Argus is a two-channel, tunable diode laser instrument developed at NASA Ames Research Center. It collects in situ measurements of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4) in the atmosphere using second harmonic spectroscopy. Argus operates in the mid-infrared range (3.3 and 4.7 micrometers) and has an accuracy of about 3% for data rates between 0.1 and 0.5 Hz. Its lightweight and compact design makes it ideal for small payload platforms such as balloons and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs).

CFH uses the chilled-mirror principle to measure water vapor from the Earth's surface up to the mid-stratosphere. It is more sensitive to water vapor than standard radiosondes, enabling it to measure dew point temperatures with an accuracy of 0.2 K. During the balloon’s flight, CFH collects measurements approximately every 2 seconds and has a vertical resolution of about 50 meters in the troposphere and 100 meters in the stratosphere.

The Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes (SHADOZ) is a NASA-sponsored network of ozonesonde stations distributed across tropical, subtropical, and remote regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesondes are launched from each station to gather profile measurements of ozone, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity. The measurements are taken at a sampling rate of 1 Hz with a vertical resolution of 100 to 150 meters. SHADOZ was created to coordinate launches among the stations and to provide a central data archive for ozone vertical profiles used in climatological and trend analyses.

It provides ozone profile measurements at a resolution of 100 to 150 m. Ozonesondes have a typical measurement rate of 0.1 Hz and can collect profiles up to around 35 km.

An ozonesonde consists of an electrochemical ozone sensor connected with a meteorological radiosonde to collect ozone, temperature, pressure, and humidity measurements as it ascends through the atmosphere. It provides ozone profile measurements at a resolution of 100 to 150 m. Ozonesondes have a typical measurement rate of 0.1 Hz and can collect profiles up to around 35 km.

The Compact Optical Backscatter Aerosol Detector (COBALD) is an in situ balloon-borne optical sensor developed at ETH Zürich. It detects aerosol backscatter at 455 nm and 940 nm using two light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources. COBALD can provide aerosol backscatter profiles up to about 30 km. It has a measurement frequency of 1 Hz and a vertical resolution of 5 m.

The Cryogenic Frost Point Hygrometer (CFH) is a balloon-borne hygrometer developed by the University of Colorado. CFH uses the chilled-mirror principle to measure water vapor from the Earth's surface up to the mid-stratosphere. It is more sensitive to water vapor than standard radiosondes, enabling it to measure dew point temperatures with an accuracy of 0.2 K. During the balloon’s flight, CFH collects measurements approximately every 2 seconds and has a vertical resolution of about 50 meters in the troposphere and 100 meters in the stratosphere.

It detects cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) by supersaturating the sampled air, allowing CCN particles to become detectable. The particles are then measured with an optical particle counter (OPC). CNC can detect particles from 0.75 to 10 μm in diameter and operates at a sampling rate of 1 Hz. It is suitable for both airborne and ground-based operations.

The Lightweight Airborne Chromatograph Experiment (LACE) is an in situ balloon-borne, three-channel gas chromatograph. It was designed to operate on the Observations of the Middle Stratosphere (OMS) balloon gondola. It provides profile measurements of various gas species up to 32 km with a vertical resolution of 300 m. LACE measures halon-1211, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and sulfur hexafluoride every 70 seconds. It measures methyl chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide every 140 seconds.

It had a field of view of 0.3 degrees, resulting in a vertical resolution of 1.5 km at an altitude of 25 km. SLS completed a full scan in approximately 300 seconds.

Ozonesondes are in situ balloon-borne instruments used to measure ozone concentration profiles. An ozonesonde consists of an electrochemical ozone sensor connected with a meteorological radiosonde to collect ozone, temperature, pressure, and humidity measurements as it ascends through the atmosphere. It provides ozone profile measurements at a resolution of 100 to 150 m. Ozonesondes have a typical measurement rate of 0.1 Hz and can collect profiles up to around 35 km.

The Fourier Transformation Spectrometer (FTS) is a high-resolution spectrometer used both in airborne and ground-based applications. FTS measures the solar radiance reflected from the surface, which can be used to estimate levels of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) in the atmosphere. It offers a spatial resolution of approximately 100m by 1000m and operates at a measurement frequency of 1 Hz during typical research flights.

The Condensation Nuclei Counter (CNC) is an in situ optical sensor produced by Droplet Measurement Technologies. It detects cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) by supersaturating the sampled air, allowing CCN particles to become detectable. The particles are then measured with an optical particle counter (OPC). CNC can detect particles from 0.75 to 10 μm in diameter and operates at a sampling rate of 1 Hz. It is suitable for both airborne and ground-based operations.

The Cryogenic Frost Point Hygrometer (CFH) is a balloon-borne hygrometer developed by the University of Colorado. CFH uses the chilled-mirror principle to measure water vapor from the Earth's surface up to the mid-stratosphere. It is more sensitive to water vapor than standard radiosondes, enabling it to measure dew point temperatures with an accuracy of 0.2 K. During the balloon’s flight, CFH collects measurements approximately every 2 seconds and has a vertical resolution of about 50 meters in the troposphere and 100 meters in the stratosphere.

Radiosondes are a balloon-borne instrument package used to collect profile measurements of pressure, temperature, humidity, and winds. These sensors are connected to a radio transmitter that sends the measurements to a ground receiver typically operating in the 400-406 MHz range. Ozonesondes are in situ balloon-borne instruments used to measure ozone concentration profiles. An ozonesonde consists of an electrochemical ozone sensor connected with a meteorological radiosonde to collect ozone, temperature, pressure, and humidity measurements as it ascends through the atmosphere. It provides ozone profile measurements at a resolution of 100 to 150 m. Ozonesondes have a typical measurement rate of 0.1 Hz and can collect profiles up to around 35 km.
