Lightning Instrument Package

The Lightning Instrument Package (LIP) is an electric field detection system. It was designed by Marshall Space Flight Center and operated aboard the NASA ER-2 aircraft. The LIP can measure the three-dimensional components of the electric field both during a thunderstorm and during calm weather. LIP has been used in numerous campaigns studying tropical cyclones.
