The Aerosol Ice Interface Transmission Spectrometer (AIITS) is an airborne light-scattering spectrometer developed by the University of Hertfordshire in collaboration with the University of Manchester. It measures forward-scattering patterns and backscatter polarization ratios of particles from 1 to 100 μm, producing 2D images. These measurements help determine particle size, concentration, shape, liquid water or ice content, and other properties. Operating at 532 nm, AIITS can achieve rates of up to 300 Hz for forward scattering and up to 5000 Hz for backscatter polarization ratios. It is primarily used for aerosol and ice-crystal measurements within cirrus clouds.
