The Campaign
The Joint Airborne IASI Validation Experiment (JAIVEx) was a multi-agency field investigation sponsored by NASA, the UK Met Office, NOAA, and other organizations. Its primary goal was to collect radiance measurements to validate and calibrate satellite data from NPOESS and MetOp. JAIVEx involved one deployment at Ellington Field in Houston, TX, during the boreal spring of 2017. The NASA WB-57 aircraft was equipped with the NPOESS Aircraft Sounder Testbed-Interferometer (NAST-I), NPOESS Aircraft Sounder Testbed-Microwave (NAST-M), and Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (S-HIS) to gather radiance measurements for validation. Ground-based observations were obtained from the Department of Energy (DoE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program’s Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) research site in the southern Great Plains.
