The Campaign

The Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment (GALE) was a multi-agency field investigation examining the mesoscale and air-sea interaction processes of coastal winter storms and their contributions to cyclogenesis. It consisted of one deployment from January to March 1986 along the Eastern United States coast, centered on the Carolinas. Several aircraft, including NASA Electra and ER-2, were deployed to measure the mesoscale structure, air-sea interaction, turbulence, boundary layer, and atmospheric state of winter storms. Ground-based measurements from surface networks, radiosondes, and radars were also collected. GALE was primarily funded by the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, NASA, and NOAA.
