The Campaign

The Carbonaceous Aerosol and Radiative Effects Study (CARES) was a field campaign that examined the evolution and characteristics of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and black carbon (BC) to help improve climate chemistry models. CARES involved a single deployment in California's Central Valley in June 2010. The Department of Energy (DOE) G-1 and NASA B-200 aircraft gathered both in situ and remote-sensing data on aerosols and trace gases. Ground-based measurements were also collected at a site within the Sacramento urban source area and at a receptor site downwind. CARES was primarily funded by the DOE, with NASA serving as a significant participant, supporting the deployment of the B-200 aircraft.
