The Campaign
The Carbonaceous Aerosol and Radiative Effects Study (CARES) was a field campaign focused on studying the evolution and characteristics of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and black carbon (BC) to enhance climate chemistry models. CARES involved a single deployment in California's Central Valley in June 2010. The Department of Energy (DOE) G-1 and NASA B-200 aircraft collected both in situ and remote sensing data of aerosols and trace gases. Ground-based measurements were also taken at a site within the Sacramento urban source area and a downwind receptor site. CARES was mainly funded by the DOE, with NASA only being a significant participant by providing funding for the B-200 aircraft deployment.
