The Campaign
The Atmospheric Variability Experiment-Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment (AVE-SESAME) was a NASA field investigation aimed at collecting high-resolution atmospheric sounding data to investigate mesoscale processes and the development of severe storms. AVE-SESAME was a continuation of NASA’s AVE Program and supported the NCAR-led SESAME campaign. It involved a single deployment across the central United States, with multiple intensive operational periods from April to June 1979. A network of rawinsonde stations was utilized to collect vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind. AVE-SESAME was funded by NASA’s Severe Storms and Local Weather Research Program within the Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications.
